Second Announcement and Call for Abstracts
Fifth International Alkaline Phosphatase Symposium
“Understanding alkaline phosphatase function – Pathophysiology and treatment of Hypophosphatasia and other AP-related diseases”
Huningue, France May 16-19, 2007
Purpose of the conference - Given the large amount of new information gained in the last few years concerning the structure and function of mammalian alkaline phosphatases (APs), the time appears ripe to arrange for a new gathering of researchers in this research area to share new information and to discuss promising new approaches for the treatment of AP-deficiencies, particularly Hypophosphatasia. The first AP symposium, organized by Torgny Stigbrand, took place in Umeå, Sweden, September 16-17, 1983 with a primary emphasis on the immunodetection of AP isozymes and isoforms. The second conference, organized by Marc De Broe, took place in Antwerp, Belgium, September 14-15, 1985 and focused on the role of APs in the pathophysiology of liver, kidney, bone and intestinal diseases. The third conference, organized by José Luis Millán, took place in La Jolla, California, February 1-3, 1989 and had as focus the cloning and characterization of the different mouse and human AP genes and initial studies towards establishing mouse models of AP deficiencies. The fourth conference again organized by Marc De Broe in Antwerp, Belgium, March 13-14, 1992 had a focus on elucidating the significance of membrane-bound versus soluble forms of APs in health and disease. This Fifth Symposium is being organized in Huningue, France under the auspices of “Hypophosphatasie Europe” a public not-for-profit organization that aims to gather and disseminate information on alkaline phosphatases to help patients with Hypophosphatasia and their families. As a consequence the focus of this Symposium is heavily slanted towards understanding the pathophysiology of hypophosphatasia and discussing existing and novel treatments for this disease. However, advances in the understanding of the role of other APs in health problems such as obesity and metabolic syndrome are also becoming apparent and will be discussed at this conference.

Location
The conference will take place in Huningue, a small town close to Mulhouse and Strasbourg in Alsace (east of France). The Basel International Airport (Switzerland) is 4 kms away from the meeting place. Huningue is the registered office of the foundation “Hypophosphatasie Europe” and there are very beautiful places around, especially typical villages famous for their great architecture and wine. The conference sessions will take place at the cultural center known as Le Triangle. The auditorium has a capacity of 152 persons, with adequate sound and video projection equipment. A hall in front of the room is large enough to accommodate all posters that will be set up and displayed during the entire conference. A large room upstairs will be used for luncheons and coffee breaks. The hotels are not far away and a minibus service will bring participants to and from the hotels at established times.
